EPA list of Top 12 Codes

The EPA has compiled information from various state emissions programs to determine the most common codes encountered by technicians nationwide.  Here is their list of top 12 codes:

EPA List
DTC Description Likely Cause
P0171 System too lean -- Bank 1  Leak or Flow problem
P1443 Ford Evap Control Valve Failure EVAP problem
P0420 Low Catalyst Efficiency
P0401 EGR Flow Insufficient  Leak or Flow problem
P0133 O2 Sensor Slow Response
P0141 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit
P0174 System too lean -- Bank 2  Leak or Flow problem
P0300 Random Misfire  Leak or Flow problem

P0301 Misfire Cylinder 1  Leak or Flow problem
P0302 Misfire Cylinder 2  Leak or Flow problem
P0303 Misfire Cylinder 3  Leak or Flow problem

Wow, 9 out of 12 codes are related to EVAP, and Leak or Flow problems!

Individual states have similar results:
-- Oregon reports 7 out of the 10 most common codes
-- Wisconsin reports 6 out of the 10 most common codes
-- Illinois reports 5 out of the 10 most common codes
-- California reports 5 out of the 10 most common codes
The majority of the most common codes all related to EVAP, and Leak or Flow problems.

Which tools are useful for finding the likely causes of those code setting problems?

The systems that have these leaks, flow and evaporative problems are typically closed systems which are easy to test when you have a tool, such as a diagnostic smoke machine.

For leaks, flow and evaporative problems in non-fuel systems consider the Vacutec PRO2000:

For fuel related systems safety and contamination becomes very important, an OEM-approved tool is essential:
