Click for details on Jorge's latest seminar in PA
A seminar by  Jorge Menchu

You can attend Jorge's latest seminar, "Strategies for Electronic and Computer System Analysis" in California, Texas or Pennsylvania.  See schedule below.

Success in the complex and ever-changing automotive repair industry gets harder every day. But success is still possible for those who are motivated and choose to focus their energy and intelligence.

This seminar will help you achieve new levels of success. This will be accomplished by providing you with the knowledge and tools to unlock your self-learning and analytical skills. We will analyze highly technical vehicle system information, by performing mental exercises based on electronics, waveform, and wiring diagram analysis. Each exercise will increase in complexity and will build on the previous exercise, culminating in a complete analytical/diagnostic strategy.

This seminar is about You and Technology!

This seminar and You

• Working smarter
• Being successful
• Building credibility
• Putting it all together

This seminar and Technology

• Reverse Engineering
• Waveforms: voltage and current
• System Dynamics
• Wiring diagrams
• Color-Coding

Should you attend?
• Beginners who want a foundation and direction that will save time and provide a great and immediate jump in his current skills.
• Intermediates who want to be an expert.
• Experts who want to push the envelope of expertise that everyone aspires to achieve.

Attend this seminar if you want to be the best you can be. To improve your ability to think, learn and solve problems.

Work Smarter by Being Smarter!

School Time
Pop Quiz!

These questions are from the book Smog Refresher Course by Steve McAfee, instructor at Skyline Comm College in California.

Let's start out with some simple questions on 5-Gas Exhaust Analysis for review, then we'll get into the more complex questions. Let's assume the catalytic converters on the cars in the test are not real good, maybe only 50% efficient. If we had really good cats, no matter what the problem the cat could clean it up for a while, and we wouldn't see any emission problems coming out the tail pipe. And please keep in mind that in real life these emission readings would vary a lot depending on the exact vehicle being tested. You may have seen one in the shop yesterday that was different. Just think about the general concept or theory involved in the test question.

1. A simple problem like a spark plug wire that fell off will likely cause lots of which pollutant to come out the tailpipe? Let's assume the engine is a non-feedback engine, or it stays in open loop.

A: NOx
B: CO2
C: CO
D: HC

2. If an EGR valve functioned properly and came open, but the passage was clogged with carbon, which pollutant would likely be high in a loaded mode test on a dyno?

A: CO
B: HC
C: NOx
D: CO2

3. High numbers of NOx come out the tailpipe when Vehicle A had it's dyno smog test. Which of the following conditions could cause this?

A: An ignition misfire from a shorting spark plug wire
B: Too much carbon inside the combustion chamber
C: A bad thermostat that causes the engine to run hotter than normal
D: Both B and C

4. Let's say an engine puts out these readings at the tailpipe: HC 459 ppm, CO 4.7%, CO2 10.3% and O2 0.1%. What do you think is going wrong with this engine?

A: Air-fuel ratio too lean
B: Air-fuel ratio too rich
C: Normal, nothing wrong
D: Too much air

5. Which exhaust gases are measured in percentage (%)?

A: HC, CO, CO2
B: CO, CO2, O2
C: CO, CO2, NOx, O2
D: HC, NOx

6. Let's say an engine puts out these tailpipe readings: HC 537 ppm, CO 0.05%, CO2 9.7%, and O2 4.5%. What do you guess is wrong with this engine, if anything? (Hint: there is no air injection.)

A: Air-fuel ratio too lean
B: Air-fuel ratio too rich
C: Normal, nothing wrong
D: Plugged exhaust

AutoNerdz Training
Tom Roberts training in Portland, Oregon

The Northwest Automotive Trades Association (NATA) is sponsoring a series of 4 lab scope classes with Tom Roberts of Autonedz in September.  You can sign up for one or all.

Nerd I on September 13th and 14th:
Lab scope operating principles, limitations and examples using the a concept known as Creative Lab Scope Technique, which provides a three-legged stool as a strategic foundation for the use of the scope in diagnostics.
Injector drive analysis: three types of injector drives, how to gather the most information from them and how to interpret the waveforms and make a correct diagnosis.
Oxygen sensors: three types of oxygen sensors and the differences in their operation and testing. Fuel control issues and some common misconceptions.
This is not a class on how to operate your chosen instrument, but a class on what to do with your scope after you have learned how to operate it. Beginners and seasoned scope jockeys have both found this module valuable.

Nerd II on October 11th and 12th:
EFI fuel pump testing: a four-step process for catching the most elusive fuel delivery problems. The scope is a very valuable tool here and can provide the technician with a kind of X-Ray vision.
GM EI ignition: This system is prone to failure in many ways and we will learn how to identify them and make correct diagnoses. We will apply Creative Lab Scope Technique to this system not so much to learn how to fix this one system, but to learn the technique.
The third presentation will be the same type of approach but we will apply it to Toyota TCCS ignition.

Nerd III on November 8th and 9th:
Primary Failure Analysis: how to identify the cause of a weak secondary ignition by analyzing the primary with the lab scope. The technique used can be applied to any coil ignition system.
Creative Lab Scope Technique applied to Nissan and Honda ignition. The goal is to learn the strategy and technique as we continue to apply it to different systems. As in Nerd I and II, the focus is practical application that gets the job done.

Nerd IV on December 6th and 7th:
In Nerd IV, we look at Ford ignition in a similar way as we have examined other systems but the bulk of the time will be spent looking at a variety of case examples we use as tools to practice the concepts we have learned throughout the series.

Location, All classes will be held at:
Northwest Automotive Trades Association
