Nitty Gritty
Triggering: Seeing is believing!

Last month we presented Jorge's article titled Building Better Relationships. This month Jorge gets to the nitty gritty...Triggering from the #1 Plug.

An important diagnostic technique is the ability to visually identify the relationships of events. For waveform analysis this is often accomplished by triggering from the #1 plug.

To do this you need to use an ignition trigger pickup that when connected to a plug wire will convert the ignition signal into a clean pulse for display onto your scope.

Some scopes come with a dedicated ignition trigger inputs such as the Modis and Fluke 98. The advantage of a dedicated trigger input is the trigger signal does not use up a viewable channel. In some situations this can be an advantage such as when using a preprogrammed test or when needing to view a maximum number of signals.

On the other hand, using a dedicated trigger input that does not display the trigger signal can put you at a disadvantage in many situations. An example is when you slow the time base. If the trigger signal is not visible it is difficult to judge when the next triggered event occurs without counting. With the trigger on display the trigger pulse will simply show itself every time and use it as a visual marker for related signal analysis.

Seeing is believing. A visual reference results into more confidence:

-- You will know if the trigger is working correctly
-- You will know that the other signals on display are displayed according
to the firing of your trigger: For example, ID cylinders for cranking compression test or running cylinder
contribution tests
-- Use it as a reference point to correctly superimpose or parade a
succession of individual events such as ignition signals even at slow time base settings
-- see the exact relationship between the trigger pulse and the other waveforms on display
-- Make adjustments to time base and still maintain the organization of the
waveforms on the screen regardless time setting

Oh No!
Fire! Fire! Fire in the Shop!

Here are the photos from a recent fire at a shop in Minnesota....the tech states...

"I would also add that not "only" did my diagnostic "corner" get ruined...as you can see that much more was lost. But we are rebuilding, better than ever. I would also encourage monthly "fire" meetings...develope a plan. We wouldn't have stopped this fire, but we may have prevented some of the damage to the building itself."

Accessories for the Snap-on MODIS

Test Drive Test Leads
The MODIS is great tool but it's lab scope test leads are too short for test drives. Plus, when using multiple channels ground stacking becomes a problem. The ST3 Test Lead Kit for Snap-on MODIS solves these problems.
