Do what the dealers do
Reprogramming yet?
Once restricted to dealers with factory scan tools, reprogramming of domestic, Asian and Euro vehicles is fast becoming a recommended step in the diagnostic method and profit-center for independent repair shops.  Are you ready to reprogram?

Bob Pattengale of PWR Training says that repairing a driveability symptom or diagnostic trouble code may be as simple as  reprogramming the PCM, especially on late model vehicles.

"One of the first steps after verifying the symptom is to check technical service bulletins (TSB) and the manufacturer's reprogramming website. TSB’s are a good source for reflash information and some vehicles cannot be repaired without reprogramming no matter how many parts you replace."  Performing this step can reduce the number of parts changed and increase your chances of fixing it right the first time.

Thanks to the introduction of SAE J2534 vehicle manufacturers are required to adhere to a set of standards that will allow independent shops to provide reprogramming services with the purchase of one, and only one, J2534 compliant device.  That's right, one tool for reprogramming any OBD2 vehicle sold in the USA!

These J2534 compliant tools are available from a variety of sources and have a variety of names:
-- Global Programmer
-- Pass-Thru Vehicle Programmer
-- Flash Programmer
-- J2534 compliant device
Regardless of their name they generally all work the same by connecting to the vehicle's OBD connector and communicating with the various vehicle protocols.

The tools also connect to your PC for the uploading of the manufacturer's software updates.  These are obtained via a download from the internet or from CD's.  These updates are not free, typically, you will purchase a subscription from any of the manufacturers whose vehicles you wish to reprogram.  Currently only, GM, Ford and Chrysler have made their software available.  By 2007, all vehicle manufacturers selling in the U.S. must provide access to their updates.  Currently, subscriptions range from as little as $24.95 for 72 hours to 1-year minimum for about $1000.  Subscription options vary by manufacturer.  Note: a TSB subscription may also be required.

Are you ready to flash?  It can speed up your diagnostic process, reduce part replacements and reduce comebacks.  To get started it only takes one tool (as mandated by the EPA) and a variety of subscriptions to get started.  Make it part your 21st Century Tune-Up check list.
