Article: Using a Gas Analyzer, Part 2

If you don't live in an area with a state sponsored tailpipe emissions program then you probably don't feel you have a need for a gas analyzer.  Bob Pattengale of PWR Training believes that five gas analyzers can improve your diagnostic success and efficiency regardless of your state's testing requirements.  In Part 2 of this article Bob presents two case studies...

Hybrid Tip: Flushing Inverters made simple

The Toyota and Ford hybrids have two cooling systems. One for the engine and one for hybrid stuff. If you follow the OEM instructions for inverter flushing and bleeding procedures you will be at it for hours as bleeding the system of air after opening it up is not user friendly. To do the job quickly, use the OEM approved coolant, always a 50/50 mix, and an "Air Lift" type tool to refill it. Before shipping the car be sure that no air is in the system.

Inverters change AC to DC and back again. This part of the car is air cooled on Honda Hybrids so no preventive maintenance is required, but these components are water cooled on the Ford / Toyota / Lexus systems and heat is the killer. The water cooled types have a 12 volt electric pump. This pump on the early Prius "2001-2003" (in hot climates) can fail. It will set a MIL and set codes. Whatever you do make sure the inverters do not overheat.  Work safe!

Launch x431 Updates

NOTICE for testing NISSAN Models:

Be sure to use a CAN BUS diagnostic connector for the testing of a NISSAN Model that has a CAN BUS system. If a NISSAN-14+16 diagnostic connector is used for such a vehicle, an IMMO deadlock may occur. When this phenomena comes up, a trouble code presents indicating a problem in the IMMO system .

But actually the IMMO system is not faulty. Simply erase the trouble code. Precautions:

1.If the vehicle to be tested has no CAN BUS system, use a NISSAN-14+16 connector

2.If the vehicle to be tested has a CAN BUS system, use a CAN BUS diagnostic connector or OBD II –16C connector (for use in the test of a non-CANBUS system).
