what else is needed with this cable to pickup the primary ignition event?
I'm assuming some kind of inductive clamp. Which one?

In addition to the lead you will need a backprobe or gator clip.
The primary ignition voltage signal is acquired by connecting the AES Primary lead to the negative post/side of the coil with a backprobe or gator clip.
Use a low current probe for primary ignition currrent.
