Diagnosing Returnless Fuel Systems by Sam Bell

Fuel supply problems can cause a range of driveability symptoms. The design of returnless fuel systems makes fuel supply diagnostics even more difficult.

Sam Bell offers a dose of clarity in his March 2013 article for Motor Magazine, Diagnosing Returnless Fuel Systems, "Returnless fuel systems call for some new diagnostic techniques, but attention to basic principles of construction and operation should go a long way toward helping to ease the transition."

Sam also explains how to adapt a return-loop system trouble chart to help you test and diagnose a returnless system.

In this article, Sam mentions a product available from AESwave called the Fuel Zapp, a fuel system analyzer compatible with gasoline and diesel engines.

John Thompson wrote about the same subject in his July 2007 article issue of Motor Magazine, Go With the Flow: Basic Fuel System Analysis.  "While basic fuel system diagnosis may begin with a fuel pressure measurement, it certainly shouldn’t end there. The system’s fuel volume and flow also must be measured and evaluated."
