In this class, John Thornton discusses Variable Cam Timing issues that will be in your shop, with correlation codes and/or performance codes. This is a practical class that will include a diagnostic process with case study examples for Domestic, Asian & European vehicles.

Topics covered
• How to diagnose both correlation and performance codes with scan data that is sometimes limited
• Be able to clearly define the actual problems before disassembly
• How to separate mechanical vs hydraulic VCT problems
• How to find out in which direction (advanced/retarded) and how much the cam is off. Knowing this will help techs eliminate possibilities of what is wrong.
• Testing techniques will include using scan data, scopes & more
• Cam crank correlation screen captures
• Verifying VCT issues or repairs by going in-cylinder
At times, VCT problems are straightforward and easy to find; other times you need a process to diagnose. This class delivers a toolbox of knowledge and testing techniques for VCT systems.

John uses case studies as teaching tools to explain system theory, testing techniques and data interpretation. Each case study in this class has three steps:
1. How to choose your best diagnostic starting point using scan data.
2. Brief discussion of how your problem system works.
3. Describe the steps taken to diagnose with a variety of tools.
John encourages technicians to use these three steps to create their own diagnostic process and testing procedures
