This class covers two types of Variable Valve Lift systems: Hydraulic and electrical actuators. VVL sometimes works in conjunction with VCT but it is an entirely separate system that requires its own game plan to diagnose.

Topics Covered
• Operation of VVL
• Modes of Operation
• Useful and necessary specifications
• Strong emphasis on testing; diagnosing via scan data & scopes
• Find VVL issues before disassembly
• How to separate VVL issues from other engine mechanical problems
• What to do when manufacturers offer little to no scan data
• Case studies will include a Chrysler 3.6 L Pentastar 2nd generation & an Audi 4-Cylinder with “Audi Valvelift System”

Technicians will understand how the system works and have a diagnostic process ready to go for these popular engines that will be in your shop. You can apply similar techniques to other manufacturers. The main goal of this class is to show how to define the problem before disassembly.
